Effect of long-term pumpage on aquatic chemistry and water quality of the ground water in the Baqa'a area

Samples of nine selected wells were used to study the effect of the long-term pumpage on aquatic chemistry and quality of the groundwater in the Baqa'a area. The study showed that the salinity as well as the concentration of Na and Cl ions fluctuated with no increasing trend, it also showed that the salts deposited on the soil surface as a consequence of using drip irrigation system, were contributing to the groundwater salinity by being leached and translocated to the aquifer by deep percolating rain water; however, this contribution was not effective so as to cause a trend of increasing in salinity. The results showed that the most likely mineral to control the concentration of Ca ion was calcite, whereas Mg ion concentration was not controlled by any particular mineral, since this ion has a tendency to remain in aqueous solution. The study also indicated that the Ca ion doesn't precipitate under open system with respect to CO2, this is due to the groundwater that is undersaturated with respect to calcite under this system. Thus, the sodicity hazard of this ground water with respect to irrigation would not increase if such groundwater had a chance to equilibrate with atmospheric CO2
