[Starch content in bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) under irrigation and drought stress]

Common bean plants, cv. Flor de Mayo RMC (FM) and cv. Michoacan 12-A-3 (M)s, grown in a greenhouse were subjected to irrigation and drought stress by suspension of watering at flowering. Starch distribution was investigated in different plant organs. The plants were sampled at three different stages: full drought; ten days after rewatering; and when the seeds were dry. Sample roots, stems, leaves, petioles, inflorescences, pod walls and seeds were taken for each plant, when present. It was found that the drought treatment did not affect starch distribution in vegetative organs, but altered starch content in the pod wall, seeds and whole plant. The cultivars studied showed different reactions. Flor de Mayo had a higher pod wall starch content for drought trated plants, while Michoacan showed no statistically significant difference for this factor. Starch content of Flor de Mayo seeds under drought stress was 60 percent lower than that of watered control plant seeds, while the same factor for Michoacan was only 40 percent lower in drought trated plant seeds than in the controls. Whole plant starch values for Flor de Mayo dropped when the plant was subjected to moisture stress, while Michoacan whole plant values showed no statistically significant difference from those of watered control plants.
