The use of mathematical equations to estimate leaf area of corn and bean cultivars recommended for the Central Valleys of Mexico is reported. The experimental data indicate that the mathematical equations which relate leaf area with certain values characteristic of the leaf (maximum length, maximum width and maximum length per maximum width), both in corn and beans, have a variable parameter. Regresion coefficient of equations that relate true area to the product of the length and width of the leaf varied from 0.74 to 0.81 for corn cultivars and from 0.56 to 0.64 for bean cultivars; also, they varied with time of sampling and location. In general, regression coefficient were highest when leaf area was regressed on the product of lenght per width and lower when leaf area was regressed on either maximum width or maximum length. Apparently, dry weigth of leaves is a poorer indicator of leaf area in the case of corn than in beans.
