Comparative levels of aflatoxin contamination on root crop chips and corn used for commercial feed preparation

The levels of aflatoxin contamination in cassava and sweet potato chips and corn stored in the ViSCA [Visayas State College of Agriculture, Baybay, Leyte, Philippines] Feed Mill for 6 months under ambient conditions were determined and compared. No aflatoxin was detected in sundried cassava and sweet potato chips stored for 6 months. Aflatoxin production in corn started after 2.5 months of storage (9.81 microgram/kg) and continued until the sixth month. The highest aflatoxin concentration obtained from corn was only 16.35 microgram/kg after nearly six months of storage. This is generally low compared to those cited in published reports. The increase in moisture content and the storage of sundried chips for six months did not have any effect on aflatoxin contamination.
