Field performance testing and acceptability of the UPLB improved village rice mill

At actual field conditions, the IVRM [Improved Village Rice Mill] operates at a capacity of six cavans per hour with an average milling recovery of 66.04 %. It is accepted and preferred by rice mill users in the area because of its high capacity, high % whole grains, clean grains, high milling recovery and whiter grains among others. The two units of IVRM performed practically the same with their corresponding characteristics being: capacity - 296 and 222 kg/hr; milling recovery - 66.23 and 63.8 %; % head rice - 37.7 and 37.23 %; % broken - 26.52 and 24.92 %; % brewer rice - 2.02 and 1.62; and by-product removed - 19.04 and 21.95 %, respectively for IVRM 1 and 2. Higher milling recoveries were observed at 12 % MC [moisture content] of the paddy followed by 14 % white 16 % gave the lowest in all the three mills used. On the other hand, the kiskisan mill performed inferior to the IVRM with the following characteristics: capacity of 143 kg/hr; milling recovery of 55.77 %; head rice of 16.64 %, % broken of 35.82 % and brewer rice of 3.27 %. The by product removed is 25.04 %. A high percentage of broken rice but lower milling recovery and capacity were observed using the kiskisan. Hence, it is recommended that the existing kiskisan mills in the rural areas be converted to the IVRM which shows its economic feasibility provided that the rubber roll hullers be made locally available in the market.
