Of the 54 cephalopods reported in the country, forty six were collected from Northern Luzon to Mindanao, Southern Sulu Archipelago and Balabac, south of Palawan [Philippines], of which eight are new and two are subspecies. In 1981, a study conducted in Manila Bay [Philippines] and some parts of Eastern Visayas [Philippines] showed that samples of cephalopods caught were identified as Loligo tagor, Loligo edulis, Thysanoteuthis rhombus, Japetela diaphana, Sepia pharaonis, Sepia aculeata, Sepiotheuthis lessoniana, Euptrymna albatrossae and Octupus membranaceus. These were caught by bagnets, purse seines, trawl nets, beach seines, round haul seines, fish corrals, fish pots and handline jiggers. Most of the squid caught in Manila Bay (Bulacan, Cavite, Bataan and Manila Bay proper [Philippines]) were at the juvenile stage all year round, while those caught in Tacloban, Carigara, Guiuan and Ormoc [Philippines] yielded bigger sizes and ranged from stages 1 to 5 in both males and females. Statistics showed that from 1980-1984, the highest cephalopod production of 35,809 tons was in 1983 followed by 32,514 tons in 1981. Frozen/chilled squids and cuttlefish export showed that the highest yield was in 1984 at 702,110 kg valued at P33,019,587.
