High density (HD) grains are those that submerged in a solution with a specific gravity greater than 1.20. Increasing the proportion of HD grains is one approach to enhance yield potential in rice. The effect of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) on the grain density of IR36 was studied by growing plants at 195, 390, and 780 micro mole per square meter per sec mole in growth cabinets throughout the life cycle or after anthesis until maturity. The number of spikelets, HD grains, and low density (LD) grains increased at higher PAR while the LD grains decreased. The contribution of HD grains to total grain yield was the major determinant of grain yield, hence, cultivars having greater proportion of HD grains would be advantageous even under low PAR. Single grain weight was higher when plants were exposed to higher PAR after anthesis. The relationship of shoot weight to number of spikelets, grains and HD grains was determined under different PARs to assess the physiological basis of HD grain production.
