Crop production potentials of growth hormones extracted from coconut water

Plant growth hormones were extracted from coconut water (CW) by a direct solvent extraction process using methylene chloride, CH2Cl2 at original pH of CW, pH2 and pH11. The crude extracts were designated as extract 1, 2, and 3 respectively. A yield of 22, 349 mg of extract 1, 2, and 3 were extracted from 50 liters of CW. Nodulating factors in CW were isolated by adsorption on an active charcoal column and stepwise elution with ethanol, acetic acid, 25% acetonitrile and basic ethanol. UV spectral curves (180-350 nm region) were determined to indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), cytokinin, zeatin, abscisic acid and the crude CW extracts/fractions. Comparison of their UV curves showed the presence of IAA-like, GA-like, cytokinin-like and abscisic-like substances in the extracts/fractions. An unidentified nodulating factor which absorbs both at 190 and 280 nm is present in the 25% acetonitrile fraction.
