Castor oil meal in broiler diets

The chemical composition and metabolizable energy [ME] of boiled and soaked-boiled castor oil cake and the chemical composition and digestibility of broiler diets containing different levels of boiled or soaked-boiled castor oil meal (COM) were evaluated. A feeding trial was also conducted using 147 day-old chicks to establish the optimum level of boiled or soaked-boiled COM in broiler diets. Three levels each (5, 10 and 15%) of boiled and soaked-boiled COM were fed to the birds for six weeks. Soaked-boiled corn had about the same CP [crude protein] total P, ME, EE [ether extract], CF [crude fibre], ash, NFE [nitrogen free extract] and Ca as boiled COM. The inclusion of either boiled COM or soaked-boiled COM at increasing levels consistently increased CF slightly and decreased EE in the diet. Digestibility of CP and CF was not significantly influenced by soaking before boiling or by increasing the level of COM in the diets. Digestibility of EE significantly decreased with the increase of COM in the diet. Final body weight gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency and dressing and lives percentages were not significantly influenced by soaking castor cake before boiling or by the amount of COM in the diet. No significant interactions were observed between kind and level of COM in the diet.
