Effect of available moisture on the growth and yield of sweet potato

Greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different levels of available moisture on growth and yield of sweet potato var. VSP-1 and VSP-2. The treatments consisted of growing the plants in soil with different moisture level namely: 100, 80, 60, 40 and 20% of field capacity. Decrease in available moisture significantly reduced vine length, number of lateral vines and total leaf area. VSP-2 produced longer vines and higher leaf area than VSP-1 regardless of the treatments, however, lateral vine production was greater in the latter compared to the former. Leaf water potential of VSP-2 was more negative than VSP-1 in all treatments. Level of available moisture significantly affected the number of weight and marketable tubers, total tuber yield, herbage yield, harvest index as well as starch and sugar contents. Varietal and interaction effects were also significant. Relative to the control, shoot and tuber dry weights were reduced by 65.7 and 94.13% respectively, when the moisture level was reduced from yield capacity to 60%. VSP-1 outyielded VSP-2 regardless of the treatment. Starch content decreased with decrease in available water. VSP-1 had significantly higher sugar content than VSP-2 in all treatments.
