Purity of seed is an important factor required for physiological studies and breeding work in rice. A convenient method was developed to determine the purity of a cultivar, and to further purify the variety. The method involves growing 150 to 200 pregerminated seeds of a variety in culture solution for three weeks. The seedlings are then weighed and the fresh weight histogram is constructed. Depending on the purity of the variety, a number of peaks will appear on the histogram. The variety with higher purity exhibits less number of peaks. Representative seedlings falling under each peak are grown until maturity on pots with soil. Further selection can be done for maturity, yield and resistance to pests and diseases. The cycle is repeated until the desired purity is attained.
