Yield improvement in Luffa cylindrica (L.) Roem by modifying plant type and increasing branch density

A plant type x branch density experiment was conducted to explore the possibilities of yield improvement in Luffa cylindrica using simple and practical procedure. Plant type was modified by mechanical pruning. Branch density was modified by increasing the number of plants. Marketable yield from the first fruiting cycle (93 days from sowing) linearly increased from 17.5 to 37.1 t/ha in response to increase in population from 40,000 to 106,666 branches/ha. The increase in yield was due to the increase in number of marketable fruits per unit area. Plant type 1 (resulting from single pruning) and plant type 2 (resulting from double pruning) performed similarly in terms of number of fruits and average fruit weight. However, differences in maturity were highly significant. Plant type 1 was earlier in terms of time of first fruit set; whereas, plant type 2 was earlier in terms of number of nodes to the first fruit.
