Effect of organic mulches: madre de cacao (Gliricidia sepium) and ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala) on the yield of corn

The effect of madre de cacao (Gliricidia sepium) and ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala) at different rates applied as surface mulch on corn was studied at Betinan Research Station, Zamboanga del Sur [Philippines]. The findings show that either sources of mulch has increased corn yield significantly at any rates of applied mulch materials except for ipil-ipil at 5 t/ha with no phosphorus (P2O5) at 40 kg/ha with higher rates of mulches could increase yield of corn which was comparable to the application of the recommended fertilizer rate (100-40-0 kg NPK/ha) in Zamboanga del Sur. Likewise, timing of application of madre de cacao mulch on corn revealed that splitting the required amount of mulch for corn (30 t/ha) increases yield significantly over the unfertilized-unmulched crop. However, it did not significantly vary when the total amount of mulches were applied either basally or at hilling up operation which yielded similarly with the use of 100-40-0 kg NPK/ha of artificial fertilizer.
