This paper reviews the progress of work being done in developing improved germplasm of tropical and sub-tropical vegetables with emphasis on the interdisciplinary team efforts of plant scientists in the humid tropics. Constraints on growing vegetable crops in the hot, humid tropics and how these constraints can be overcome through genetic manipulations are also discussed. A number of vegetable crops are highlighted giving particular emphasis on the development of tropical tomato which is illustrative of what good organization, team efforts and dedicated scientist could accomplish for the benefit of the rural poor in record time.
