Comparative growth performance of Azolla pinnata and Azolla microphylla in mineral-deficient-medium [Philippines]

Nutrient solution culture studies were carried out on Azolla pinnata and Azolla microphylla to assess their growth under the constraint of mineral deficiency. In both species, absence of any one macro element (except nitrogen) in the growth medium resulted in the reduction of (1) biomass production, (2) nitrogen accumulation, (3) nitrogenase activity and (4) chlorophyll content but (5) increased respiration rate. The degree of the above responses to mineral stress was observed to differ between the two Azolla species.
