Effect of irrigation timing and depth of water table on the yield of corn [Philippines]

Three field experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of irrigation timing and depth of water table on the yield of two corn varieties planted on different soil types under Isabela [Philippines] condition. The corn varieties were pioneer 6181 and IPB Var 1 as mainplots; irrigation were applied (restored to field capacity) at tasseling, silking and grain filling stages (I1); tasseling and grain filling stages (I2); and at 50% depletion of the available water (I3) as subplots. The water table depth ranged from 0.80 to 1.4 m; 1.8 to 2.0 m and more than 2.0 m at San Mateo, Luna and Carulay sites, respectively. Irrigation timing significantly influenced corn yield. Corn irrigated with treatments I3 or I1 gave better yields than irrigating corn with treatment I2 at Carulay and Luna sites. However, results obtained at San Mateo site showed no significant difference in yield among the three irrigation treatments. The insignificant effects of irrigation treatments on the grain yield could be attributed to the presence of shallow water table which served as sufficient source of water needs of corn thus, masked the benefits from added surface water.
