Stability studies of essential oils from some Philippine plants, 2: Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf

Lemongrass oil was extracted from fresh, air-dried and wilted leaves of Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf by water distillation. The effects of temperature, light and length of storage on the quality of the oil were determined. Evaporation by exposure to sunlight was about three times faster than at room temperature and about 46 times faster than when stored in the refrigerator. The citral content of the oils decreased after a year of exposure under the same temperatures. A comparison of the thin layer chromotograms of oil samples exposed and unexposed to lights taken monthly for nine months indicated a deterioration in the quality of the oils. The rates of evaporation of the essential oils extracted from fresh, air-dried and wilted samples upon exposure to different temperatures were also determined. The most stable of the three oil samples was the oil extracted from fresh leaves.
