Relationship between the glycoalkaloid level and infection of potato tubers with Fusarium ssp. in the storage period [Fusarium sulphureum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium avenaceum]

In mature tubers of 36 potato varieties the content of glycoalkaloids was determined. The tubers of these varieties were inoculated with the fungi: Fusarium sulphureum Schl.; Fusarium solani var coeruleum (Sacc.) Booth, and Fusarium avenaceum (Fr) Sacc., in proportion of 70:15:15, directly after wounding and after 24 or 72 hours. After 8 weeks of storage at 15 degrees C, the infection of tubers by dry rot was assessed. On average, the threefold increase of glycoalkaloid level in tubers of 36 potato varieties in 1983 was associated with the two-fold decrease of percentage of dry rot infected tubers, when inoculation was done directly after wounding. Increase of time between the wounding and inoculation resulted in the decrease of tuber infection. This decrease was more pronounced in the year of higher glycoalkaloid content. Correlation coefficient between the concentration of glycoalakaloids and percentage of infected tubers for 36 varieties and 3 years of study r = (minus)0.376, the critical value being 0.254 at alpha = 0.01
