Effect of 8-hydroxyquinoline, 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate, silver nitrate, silver thiosulfate, glucose and sucrose on vase life of dendrobium pompadour cut flowers

The solution contained 100 mg/l 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) or 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS) extended the vase life of cut Pompadour flowers to 23.3 and 7.5 % over the control whereas the solution contained 100 mg/l 8-HQS plus 2 % sucrose did to 68.4 % over the control. The solution contained the concentration of 10mg/l AgNo3 could extend the vase life to 38.8 % over the control, but when 2 % sucrose was added in this solution, the vase life would be slightly reduced. The solution contained 200 mg/l 8-HQS, 10 mg/l AgNO3 and 2 % sucrose was the best and it could extend the vase life almost two fold over the control. Cut Pompadour flowers from the production site with shorter vase life tended to respond to the holding solution better than those with longer vase life. Cut Pompadour flowers with the stem end inserted in plastic tubes containing distilled water and the holding solution for 3 days had no difference in vase life. If those from simulated transhipment were vased in the holding solution, vase life would be extended up to 92.03-106.08 % over the control. Besides, silver ion in the anionic from thiosulfate with 8-HQS and sucrose in the pulsing solution could not extend the vase life but the holding solution could extend vase life longer than silver ion in the cationic form of nitrate.
