A study of piroplasmosis in cattle

Piroplasmosis in cattle was studied in 7 Hereford steers, inoculated with 5x10(exp 7) to 5x10(exp8) Babesia bovis at the rate of 1 millilitre each. The clinical symptoms of the affected animals was fever, anorexia, depression, anemia, jaundice, haemoglobinuria, muscular tremor and loss of condition. Three out of the 5 infected animals died and 2 survived. The body temperature of the infected animals was higher on the second day after inoculation. The highest temperature of 41 degree celsius or higher was observed on the sixth or the seventh day. The pack cell volume dropped from the second day onwards. The lowest PCV of 9.8 was found on the tenth day. The first detection of B. bovis from the thin blood smears was on the third day after infection. B. bovis was found in a low density. The highest parasitaemia varied from 1 to 2 parasites per field with the average of 1.2 parasites per field on the eighth day.
