Effect of NaCl salinity stress on accumulation of N(+), K(+), Cl(-) and its relation with growth and sugar level in Triticum aestivum L. cv Akbar [in Bangladesh]

NaCl salinity caused a 3.7 fold to 6.6 fold increase in Na(+) content of root and that of shoot increased by 3.4 fold to 4.2 fold following 25 to 150 mM NaCl treatment respectively. Accumulation of Cl(-) in root increased by 3.4 fold and that in shoot by 1.5 fold at 100 mM NaCl treatment. Stimulation of chloride accumulation was observed in plants grown in 25 mM and 50 mM NaCl. K(+) content of root and shoot decreased following NaCl salinity. K(+)/Na(+) ratio of shoot gradually decreased from 2.07 in control to 0.34 in 100 mM NaCl treatment. Similarly, K(+)/Na(+) ratio in root decreased from 1.10 in control to 0.12 in 100 mM NaCl treatment. Reducing and non-reducing sugar content of root and shoot increased in stressed plant. NaCl salinity stress (100 mM) decreased dry matter content of root by 33% and had no effect on that of shoot at four weeks of treatment. 150 mM NaCl treatment decreased both root and shoot dry weight by 81% and 61% respectively. On the contrary, 25 mM and 50 mM NaCl treatment had no effect on growth except a slight stimulation in shoot. However, root and shoot length gradually decreased with the increase in NaCl concentration from 25 to 150 mM.
