Present status of vegetable disease in Bangladesh

A survey on the incidence and severity of diseases of 12 vegetables was conducted from 1983 to 1988 in 15 districts covering 53 Upazillas of Bangladesh. A total of 72 diseases were recorded on these vegetable crops. Diseases found with 100 incidence were leaf roll of potato and tomato mosaic of cucumber, yellow-vein mosaic of okra and Alternaria bight of cabbage. Though 34 diseases of potato occur in our country, 12 were found to be common. Diseases such as early blight, dry rot, scab, leaf rool were most prevalent. In storage diseases like dry rot, soft rot, occur commonly and cause 2-6% loss of potato even in cold storages. In tomato, 10 diseases were recorded. Late blight caused 70-80% crop loss in 1986/87 season. Bacterial wilt and leaf rool often cause crop loss in the field. In brinjal, bacterial wilt and little leaf virus are common diseases in the field. For chilli die back and fruit rot are threats to its cultivation in many areas, so also yellow-vein mosaic for okra. Some bacterial and virus diseases cause substantial damage to cucurbits in Bangladesh
