Evaluation of rhizobium in different carrier media and nitrogen levels in soybean

Soybean (var. PVI) inoculated with a Rhizobium strain BGM910, maintained in liquid and peat media (two different carrier growth media) was sown in the field to study the efficiency of the rhizobium in these two media and different N-levels for plant growth, nodulation, plant nitrogen accumulation, yield and yield contributing characters. Morphological parameters like plant height, leaf area, plant dry matter and also nodulation was studied in 3 phases. The tendency was similar in all these phases and it could be noticed that inoculation with Rhizobium in li1uid as well as in peat could enhance plant growth. An increment of up to 41% in plant height was observed in treatment combination of 50 kg N/ha with peat based inoculum (N(50)I(p)) against control (N(0)I(0)-0 kg N/ha and non-inoculated). Only nitrogen fertilizer could not promote the plant growth significantly. In case of plant dry matter content 56% increase of dry matter was recorded by N(50)I(p) treatment against control at 30 days after emergence (30 DAE). In nodulation study it was observed that peat based inoculum produced more nodules and hence had higher nodule dry weight than liquid inoculum.
