Effect of phenyl mercuric acetate on the nitrogen fixation capacity of Westiellopsis prolifica Janet [in India]

The effect of a pesticide, phenyl mercuric acetate (PMA) on the nitrogen fixation of a blue-green alga, Westiellopsis prolifica Janet was studied. The extracellular Kjeldhal nitrogen liberation and the cellular Kjeldhal nitrogen content of the alga were greatly enhanced when compared to control, on its exposure to 0.004 mg 1(1) of PMA, at all exposure periods. At 0.01 mg 1(-1) of PMA, both cellular and extra cellular nitrogen content showed an initial increase over the control value at initial days of exposure, but with the increase in exposure period the values declined significantly. Drastic decline in the cellular and the extracellular Kjeldhal nitrogen values were observed on exposure of the alga to 0.016 mg 1(-1) PMA.
