Efficacy of chicken litter amendment to soil for control of root-knot on tomato

The efficacy of chicken litter amendment to soil against root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita), race 2 on tomato was tested in a pot house experiment. Nematode infested soil was treated with the material at the rate of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0%(w/w). Fifteen days after application of the amendment seeds of a susceptible tomato cultivar were sown, 10 seeds/pot. Ten days after sowing percentage of germination was recorded and five seedlings were allowed to grow in each pot providing necessary moisture and nutrients. Fifty five days after germination the plants were removed from the soil and data on shoot height, fresh weight of shoot and root, gall index, and numbers of galls and female nematodes/g roots were determined. Severity of root gall decreased but plant growth increased gradually with increasing rates of chicken litter added to soil. The amendment gave 18-75%, 80-320% and 30-300% increase in shoot height, shoot weight and root weight respectively; on the other hand, 20-74%, 6-72% and 5-50% reduction in gall number, nematode number and gall index value respectively were obtained with the amendment. Higher rates of increase in plant growth and reduction in root-knot severity corresponded to the higher rates of chicken litter added to soil. However, at least 1% amendment was reduction in root-knot severity.
