The effects of different treatment on the occurrence of diseases and weeds in red fescue and Kentucky bluegrass

In 1986-1989 in the seed cultures of red fescue and Kentucky bluegrass, the effects of different methods of post-harvest treatment (thermosanitation immediately after seed harvest and in spring, low cutting height) were investigated on the occurrence of leaf diseases (the rust Puccinia brachypodii var. poae-nemoralis, Puccinia poarum, Uromyces festucae; powdery mildew and the spot Drechslera poae), parasitary ear leucochroism, ergot and dead plant residues. Evaluating the results of three harvest years it can be stated that the burning of stubble and postharvest residues decreases the occurrence of leaf diseases in red festuce in autumn, in Kentucky bluegrass the effects of this treatment are not so expressive. The postharvest burning in the second harvest year and low cutting height of the stand in the third harvest year effectively lowered the number of stems with ear leucochroism, the burning also lowered partly the number of ergot sclerotia and the occurrence of afunctional sod, that means dead plant residues. The low cutting height stimulates the dicotyledonous weed infestation of seed cultures, the effect ot thermosanitation reduce the weed occurrence.
