Fleece structure in lambs of the Improved Wallachian breed

Wool fibre length, mean fibre diameter in staple and morphological structure of fleece in lambs of the Improved Wallachian breed (IW) were evaluated at the age of four to eight days (first wool sampling), 60 to 70 days (2nd sampling), and 120 to 130 days (3rd sampling). The lambs were evaluated with respect to their classification into types 1) convenient, 2)finer and 3) coarser. 300 fibres were measured in all wool samples. The lambs of type 2 had shorter wool fibres in all cases (P0.01). Average fibre length was 30.97 mm at the first sampling; at the second sampling the respective values were V 91.46 mm, 92.69 mm (male, V female) and at the third sampling V 145.94 mm, 145.31 mm. The proportion of undercoat increased with the older age of animals, white the proportion of medullary hairs decreased. Regardless of the lamb type the proportions of different kinds of hairs were as follows with respect to the order of samplings: undercoat V 78.19; 83.85 and 96.18 per cent; 81.18; 81.57 and 91.53 per cent; coarse V 10.23; 6.32 and 2.39 per cent; 8.58; 8.04 and 4.18 per cent; semicoarse hairs V 7.20; 7.66 and 1.17; 6.63; 7.45 and 3.19 per cent; kemp fibres, including coarse hairs with the medulla portion higher than 50 per cent: V 4.38; 2.17 and 0.26 per cent; 3.61; 2.94 and 1.10 per cent. The differences in the proportions of different kinds of hairs between the lamb types were significant (P0.05). Similarly, significant differences between the lamb types were observed in mean fibre diameter increased with the older age of lambs.
