Dynamics of humus under different systems of cultivation of spring barley and different use of straw was studied in heavy alluvial soils under climatic conditions of South Moravia. Results obtained within a 14-year experimental period can be summarized as follows: Humus balance was highly significantly the best in the treatment with crop rotation. The monoculture showed lower values. Of three methods of straw utilization the most favourable was ploughing-in of straw. Burning and removal of straw showed insignificant differences although it was expected that the humus content could be lower after burning. The obtained results did not indicate this decrease. The minimum tillage improves highly significantly the conditions of humification in both layers under study. A different level of N-fertilization did not show significant differences in the humus balance even after 14 years.
