Supplying curd whey to cattle

The experimental group investigated in a Holstein Friesian milking cow and calf population the consumption of curd whey ad libitum instead of water. The control group drank water. The daily whey consumption of cows surpassed 40 litres. Their milk production was at first smaller than that of the controls but at the 2-4th milking it surpassed that. The milk fat percentage fluctuated once in favour of the controls and once of the experimental group. However, the milk protein percentage was always highest in the experimental group. The daily milk fat and protein production increased absolutely by whey drinking. The experimental animals produced 1 litre milk with 3.13 per cent less feed costs. This resulted per cow and per day in a 1.26 kg smaller fodder consumption. The experimental calves consumed 11 per cent more whey individually and daily than the water drunk by the control calves. The uptake of 1 kg dry matter needed 2.65 litre whey and 2.90 litre water, respectively. The daily average body weight increase of the experimental calves significantly surpassed that of the controls.
