The net eating time, the rumination time, the time between the end of net eating and the beginning of rumination were examined among 202 milk-producing daughters - Holstein Friesian and Hungarian Flekvieh x Holstein Friesian R1 cows - of 15 bulls. The net eating time was greater in 12-16 per cent of the examined cows than the rumination time. The influence of net eating time and rumination exercised on milk production was 7 and 16 per cent, respectively. The influence of net eating time exercised on rumination was found to be of 13 per cent. There were several bull progeny groups in which the behaviour had a much greater role in the development of milk production. By the end of the century the keeping technologies will determine the limits of genetic capacities and the genetic values of the domestic animals' behavioural characteristics must be better known to exploit them for milk production.
