Data on the fertilization of sunflowers

The NPK fertilization of 10 sunflower hybrids grown after wheat on an intensely limy meadow soil was studied in a long-term experiment with rising rates and a plant density of 50 000 or 70 000 ha. Compared to the 50 kg/ha rate, 150 kg N only led to a slight improvement in achene yield, oil content and oil zield. This rise was only significant for achene yield and for oil yield at 50 000 plants/ha. PK fertilization caused greater changes than N. Optimum achene and oil yield were obtained in the P30K60 treatment, and the highest oil content in the unfertilized plots. Higher PK rates had a reducing effect, particulary on oil content. Sunflowers have lower nutrient requirements than wheat, so the satisfactory level of PK supplies in the soil is lower, and even at this level less fertilizer is required. Excessive nutrient application reduces income.
