Carbohydrate and nitrogen translocation in winter wheat plants out at the beginning of grain development

Carbohydrate and N translocation was examined in winter wheat plants cut in two phases at the beginning of grain development. The results confirm earlier findings that two-phase harvesing in the first half of grain development results in an increase in thousand grain weight and N content due to the reutilization of assimilates stored in the vegetative organs. During the period prior to threshing there was a rise in the totel carbohydrate content of the ear rachis, i.e. even in plants cut at the beginning of grain development, the translocation of the assimilates stored in the vegetative organs in the ear takes place. Some of the 15N injected into the internodel cavity below the flag leaf of cut plants found its way into the grains by time threshing took place. Some of the NO3 quantity introduced into the plant was reduced and could be demonstrated in the grains in the form of ammonium-M. The wheat plants preferred NH4 assimilation to NO3 assimilation. The winter wheat variety Mv 4 showed a better N management than Mv 8, having a higher total N content in the grains and utilizing a larger proportion of the NH4 and NO3 introduced.
