This study begins with a background of changes in the structure and organisation of the timber export trade and of its suppliers in New Zealand. The implications of these changes for the trade and for the merchants involved in it are looked at. Some thoughts are also offered on the characteristic methods of operation of those involved in the trade such as those who hoped to exert market dominance in the Kauri trade of the late nineteenth century Auckland and the constraints imposed on them by government policy
