Describes a trial which was started in 1988 on a Harihari gleyed recent soil in the Lower Grey Valley, New Zealand, to investigate the optimum restoration methods of combining the soils and gravel material available after dredging for maximum pasture and animal production. Treatments laid down on the tailings consisted of control (tailings only), 30 and 50 cm of fines (10 mm), 30 cm of subsoil, 10 cm topsoil on 20 cm subsoil and a mixture of 15 cm subsoil and 15 cm of fines. There was also an undisturbed pasture treatment. Ryegrass/clover mixture was sown and cattle grazing commenced 6 months later. Pasture production was highest from undisturbed pasture. The 10 cm topsoil/20 cm subsoil treatment was the highest yielding restoration treatment. The poorest treatments were 30 cm subsoil/fines, 50 cm fines and the control
