Pasture establishment to rehabilitate land after open-cast mining at Rotowaro (New Zealand)
1990
Longhurst, R.D. | O'Connor, M.B. (Ruakura Agricultural Centre, Hamilton (New Zealand))
Describes a series of experiments undertaken to investigate the fertility requirements of pasture species establishment and to compare these with existing rehabilitation practice. Four rates of superphosphate (250, 500, 1000 and 2000 kg/ha), two rates of lime (0 and 5 t/ha) and two seedmixes (agricultural versus soil conservation mix) were tested. The conclusions were that pastures can be successfully established by applying capital dressings of fertiliser to overcome nutrient limitations, liming to reduce acidity and hence enhance legume performance and by sowing the best available pasture cultivars
