During the electrification of 411 km of the main trunk rail-line, in the North Island of New Zealand, 8 km of track had to be realigned, 2 bridges built and a large culvert constructed. This resulted in 32 ha of land needing to be reconstructed and as this lay within the boundaries of Tongariro National Park special problems arose. This paper outlines the planning processes leading up to the project, the revegetation principles followed and the landform rehabilitation principles which were applied
