Effluent disposal systems: a local authority view

The design of domestic septic tank effluent disposal systems is a complex issue to be left to those appropriately qualifies. Many systems fail after a short period of time and become a "nuisance" under the Public Health Act, New Zealand. Carrying out remedial measures is often very difficult. Care and practical considerations at the time of subdivision and building designs will extend the life of a disposal system. NZS 4610 is of limited use in many areas of New Zealand. Effluent disposal systems should not rely on maintenance from the property owner. This paper presents the view of two local authority officers on these matters
