Elongation ability and some morphological characteristics of deepwater rice in Bangladesh

Deepwater rice (DWR) areas in Bangladesh can be classified into lowland, medium lowland, and medium highland. The elongation ability and morphological characteristics of 211 DWR varieties grown in these areas were examined under two daylength conditions. The lowland varieties exhibited better elongation ability than the medium lowland and medium highland varieties. In particular, internode elongation in lowland varieties occurred at a very early growth stage; a large number of elongated internodes were observed. The relation between the number of leaves and number of elongated internodes on the main culm differed greatly in lowland varieties. The data suggests that varieties with elongation ability exhibited at an early growth stage, such as those found in the lowlands, could be planted in deepwater areas where early seeding is practiced. Further studies are needed to determine the relationship between elongation and yield potential.
