Changing pattern of Philippine forestry and its implication on forest products utilization
1990
Lantican, D.M.
The raw material base of the forest products industry in the Philippines is changing drastically due to the depletion of the virgin forest together with the traditional commercial species, the inaccessability of the remaining natural forest and the growing concern for the conservation and protection of the environment. Future timber supply will rely more and more on the regrowth of logged over areas and man-made industrial tree plantation (ITP), lesser known species (LKS), multipurpose tree species (MPTS), and commercially less acceptable species (CLAS). Fast growing indigenous and exotic species of smaller diameter will replace the high quality big diameter logs that use to be the mainstay of today's timber industry. There will be a shift in emphasis from the big producers with giant factories and very heavy machines to small production units most probably community and home based.
