Maximum yield research in corn in southern Philippines

Two experiments were carried out from July to December 1988 to evaluate the influence of various fertilizer levels, population density and irrigation on the yield of corn in the Philippines. These experiments were conducted at the University of Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center (USMARC), USM, Kabacan, Cotabato, Philippines. Highest yield of 15.6 t/ha was obtained in Experiment 1 with interaction effect of Pioneer hybrid YCPG 81 planted at 90,000 plants/ha and fertilizer at the rate of 500-300-300 kg/ha of N, P2O5 and K2O, respectively. As to the effect of individual components, YCPG 81 gave a significantly higher yield of 13.1 t/ha compared to Y8G62 which yielded 12.6 t/ha. Corn grown at a higher population density of 90,000 plants/ha yielded 13.5 t/ha which was significantly higher than the yield of 12.2 t/ha of corn planted at lower population density of 70,000 plants/ha. Corn plants fertilized at 150-60-60 kg/ha of N, P2O5 and K2O, respectively, yielded 11.8 t/ha. Increased rate of fertilizer at 250-150-150 and 500-300-300 kg/ha correspondingly increased yields to 12.9 and 13.8 t/ha, respectively. In all treatments, the highest yield of 11.7 t/ha was obtained from YCPG 81 grown at population density of 90,000 plants/ha, irrigated and fertilized with 500-300-300 kg/ha of N, P2O5 and K2O, respectively.
