Improved grain quality and yielding ability of hybrid rice
1989
Huang, T. | Tang, Z. (Jiangxi Univ., Nanchang (China). Dept. of Biology)
Seven characters-yield potential, protein content, amylose content, gel consistency, head rice percentage, net photosynthetic efficiency, and chlorophyll content were examined in 14 hybrid rice combination and their parents. Correlations between hybrids value (F1) and high parent value (P1), hybrid value and low parent value (P2), and hybrid value and the mean value of both parents (MP) also were made. The hybrid value of two characters, net photosynthetic efficiency, and gel consistency correlated significantly with P1, P2, and MP. As the average value net photosynthetic efficiency rose, F1 yield increased and amylose content decreased, resulting in higher gel consistency and softer grain quality. To develop new combination of fine grain quality and high-yield ability, parents should have high net photosynthetic efficiency and high gel consistency.
