Prochloraz: an effective fungicide for crown rot of banana

A completely randomized design was used in this study with 6 prochloraz replicated three times (ml/liter): 0 (control), .22, .33, .44, and .55. Newly harvested Lacatan bananas were washed thoroughly prior to fungicide treatment. Prochloraz was sprayed on the banana crowns which were kept in an incubation chamber. Daily observations for symptom and or disease development was done for 15 days or until the bananas were fully riped. Ratings were based on percentage infection and degree of rotting or lesion length (cm.). Findings showed that at 10 days after treatment (DAT), prochloraz at .44 and .55 ml/liter suppressed crown rotting; at 15 DAT, the rate of .33 was similarly effective. Percentage infection was 100% for the control, but for the effective rates they ranged from 26.17 to 39.34% only. There was no significant difference in crown rots of bananas treated with .33, .44, and .55 ml/liter prochloraz. On the other hand, the degree of rotting was significantly lesser in the highest rates of .55 ml/liter (12.95 cm) and .44 (19.63 cm). It follows that higher rates of prochloraz resulted to better control of crown rot in bananas.
