Grain yield as a function of days-to-heading, plant height, and panicle number in upland rice

Efforts in upland rice breeding are directed towards developing varieties with high yield potential, early to medium growth duration, intermediate stature, and moderate tillering. Thus, data from two seeding dates of 1978-1988 upland rice yield trials at IRRI [International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] upland farm and two farmer's fields in Batangas [Philippines] were evaluated and grain yields correlated against days-to-heading, plant height, and panicle number. From among 3,186 observations across all sites, seeding dates, and years, the relationship between grain yields and days-to-heading was not significant. However, significant positive correlations were observed in years and seeding dates within site that had fairly adequate rainfall. This result suggests that soil moisture availability is a factor that could alter grain yield-growth duration relationship. Positive curvilinear relationships were found between grain yield and both plant height and panicle number. The multiple regression of the above stated agronomic characteristics on grain yield can explain only 26% of yield variation (R2 = 0.26** ). Thus, other variables such as quantified drought stress and other yield components should be included in predicting grain yield of upland rice.
