Integration of control techniques against corn borer
1988
Rejesus, B.M. | Madlangbayan, R.H. | Sayabo, A.S.
Two or more of the following control techniques: synthetic organic insecticides, microbial insecticides (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki), predatory earwigs (Euborellia annulata), egg parasites (Trichogramma evanescens) resistant varieties and detasseling were integrated and evaluated in the field with the aim of developing a practical and economical pest management (IPM) scheme(s) for corn borer. Based on the population, yield and economic returns derived from the various experiments conducted from Jan 1985 to Dec 1987, five IPM schemes are given. Detasseling was made by removing the tassels before pollen shedding at 3:1 ratio (3 rows of every 4 rows) plus the application of either synthetic or microbial insecticides or the release of predatory earwigs on the plants with intact tassels. Early planting, sanitation and the use of resistant varieties if available will enhance further the effectiveness of any of the five IPM schemes.
