Intercropping ampalaya with tomato, mungbean and soybean

An experiment was conducted at the University of Southeastern Philippines, Mampising Campus, Mabini, Davao [Philippines] to determine the possibility and effect of intercropping ampalaya with tomato, mungbean, and soybean. The results of the study showed that the number of non-marketable fruits of ampalaya in all treatments were not significantly different. Intercrops did not affect the degree of insect-damage, deformation and undersizing of fruits. The yield of ampalaya was not affected by the intercrops. There was slight difference of the yield in ampalaya + mungbean combination but was not statistically significant. The low yield was mainly attributed to the shading effect rendered by mungbean to ampalaya during the early stage of growth. The combined money value of ampalaya and the intercrop (tomato) was highly significant. This was due to the high yield of tomato per hectare. Based on the land use efficiency, mungbean + ampalaya combination was not profitable in terms of income per se. Reduction of soil pH was common to all treatments. However, highest reduction was in ampalaya + tomato combination. Organic matter content of the soil also reduced dramatically in ampalaya + soybean and in monoculture. Intercropping ampalaya with either tomato, mungbean or soybean were found successful. Increase income can be made possible with these crop combination.
