Effect of foliar K application on the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

An experiment was conducted to determine the yield, physical and chemical leaf qualities of flue-cured tobacco as well as the returns as affected by concentration and time of foliar K2SO4 application. It was conducted in Phrae, Thailand, from November 1986 to March 1987. K2SO4 solution (0, 1, 2, and 3 percent) were applied at 40; 50; 60; 40 and 60; 40, 50 and 60 days after transplanting. The treatments were arranged in a split plot following the randomized complete block design with four replications. Specific leaf weight was highest in plant sprayed in multiple doses of 2-3 percent K2SO4 with values ranging from 7.99 to 8.25 g/100 sq cm leaf area. Plants which received 3 percent K2SO4 yielded 17 percent higher than the control. Crop values of P70,672, P75,040, P76,340, and P83,709 per hectare corresponding to the 0, 1, 2, and 3 percent K2SO4 application were realized. This resulted in 18, 22 and 53 percent increase in net return with the application of 1, 2 and 3 percent K2SO4, respectively. Puff count per cigarette was higher (17.32) in the 0-K plants as compared to K-treated plants (14.67-15.08). On the contrary, tar content was lowest in the 0-K plants with an average of 18.60 mg/cigarette. The 0-K and 3 percent K2SO4 treated plants at 40 DAT contained the highest level of nicotine (0.85-0.86 percent). The nicotine levels were generally very low such that inspite of the near normal level of N and reducing sugars, the N-nicotine and RS-nicotine ratios were exceedingly high.
