Influence of synchrony of planting and impact of sequentially planted crops on populations of rice pests [Philippines]

The population density of the green leafhopper (GLH) was three times higher in an asynchronous site than in a synchronous one in Bohol, Philippines. Rice tungro virus (RTV) infected source plants were abundant in the asynchronous area. Significantly higher RTV incidence and correspondingly lower yield were recorded in the asynchronous site. On the other hand, significantly higher population density of GLH was present on the third planting as compared to the first two plantings of sequentially planted crops (monthly plantings). The incidence of RTV was low in all plantings but gradually increased from the first planting to the third planting. Yield was significantly higher on the first planting as compared to yields from the second and third plantings. Lower yields on the second and third plantings may be attributed to high incidence of pests. High incidence of thrips was observed on the second planting. The low yield during the third planting was due to high incidence of caseworm and ricebug coupled with severe rat damage.
