Herbage production from a rice crop

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) herbage can be an important forage in areas where rice is the only crop available during the monsoon and crop duration is long. Field experiments showed that from 40 to 80 days after transplanting (DT), herbage with a dry weight of 0.5 to 3.2 t/ha can be harvested from B4259-148-1-3-1-3, a 160-day breeding line. Owing to the increase in biomass, crude protein yield increased up to 80 DT despite the declining nitrogen content. Early pruning regardless of cutting height produced acceptable grain yields. Lower cutting height gave higher herbage yield. Use of leaf position as a guide in prunning eliminated exact measurement of cutting height and the danger of cutting the growing point of the culm. A 40 + 70 DT or a 50 + 80 DT double cut provided more flexibility in herbage harvesting and gave a herbage yield comparable to that of the 60 or 70 DT single cut.
