The studies attempted to determine the content of sulphur, zinc, lead, manganese, mangnesium, calcium, and potassium in wood of vigorous and weakened firs. The studies were conducted in 18 fir stands represented by sample trees - 2 trees cut from each stand. The stem analysis was made (including width increment at the height of 1.3 m). The wood was sampled in 10-year periods. The chemical analyses showed that the mean concentrations of the above mentioned elements in wood of vigorous and weakened trees did not significantly differ. The obtained results suggested that almost all fir stands in Poland were affected by sulphur contamination (mean annual concentration - 20 mg/(cu. m))
