Reproductive growth and development of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.cv. Trioicum) under varying levels of shade and N fertilizer

Rooted black pepper (Piper nigrum L. cv. trioicum) stem cuttings were grown in pots and exposed to 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% shade and varying amounts of nitrogen fertilizer. Shading had an adverse effect on reproductive growth of black pepper. Extreme shade (75%) induced excessive vegetative growth of plants, hence the flowering process was delayed. On the other hand early flowering and consequently the production of large number of spikes occurring in plants exposed to 25% shade gave the highest fruit set per spike, bigger peppercorns, highest piperine content and lowest spike abscission.
